Kate Middleton was last seen at a public engagement on December 25, when she joined the king and other senior royals at a Christmas Day church service.

Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales, announced her cancer diagnosis on Friday, two months after undergoing abdominal surgery, and said she was in the early stages of treatment and was undergoing chemotherapy for the malignancy.

Despite not coming from a royal or aristocratic background, she has always given the impression of taking the challenges of royal life in her stride and quickly became one of the family's most popular members.

Leading Prime Ministers and other dignitaries from across the globe wished the 42-year-old a speedy recovery after the news came through on Friday. Here are some of the reactions:

Kate's brother James Middleton shared a photo of himself with his sister as children on Instagram and commented saying: "Over the years, we have climbed many mountains together. As a family, we will climb this one with you too."
"We wish health and healing for Kate and the family, and hope they are able to do so privately and in peace," Prince Harry and Meghan said in a statement.
