French Finance Minister Christine Lagarde is in India on the latest leg of a world tour aimed at offsetting opposition by emerging countries to her appointment as head of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Lagarde met top policy markers including Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee and Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission Montek Singh Ahluwalia. In his post meeting address, Pranab Mukherjee clarified that India has not given any commitment to support Lagarde's candidature for the top job. Speaking exclusively to CNBC-TV18's Karan Thapar, Lagarde said, she too agrees that IMF MD selection should not be on basis of nationality but on the basis of merit. "India's leaders seem willing to consider my candidature," she added. IMF does not belong to anyone, including the Europeans, said Lagarde, who feels emerging markets must have a proper representation on the worldwide body. "If selected, I am capable of divorcing myself from my origin," she said. Below is a verbatim transcript of Christine Lagarde
