The Bellandur police said that Reddy worked at a pub in Koramangala and was drunk at the time of the incident.

According to reports, Soumyasankar and his family -- who hail from Odisha -- were returning from a weekend trip when the incident took place. While driving on a particularly bad stretch of road riddled with potholes, Soumyashankar applied the brakes suddenly and Reddy, who was riding behind the car, bumped into it and fell. He got up, approached that car that stopped some distance away and began to accost Soumyashankar for applying the brake suddenly.

In a video uploaded by Soumyasankar on X, he can be heard trying to talk to Reddy but Reddy abused him and demanded he step out of the car. "I wanted to have a word with him but he appeared to come in rage to hit us," Soumyashankar wrote. He further clarified that he applied the brake because it was a slope and the road was wet; he wanted to avoid bumping into the car in front of him.
