A man in Bengaluru with 255 traffic violations was recently served a notice by the police to clear Rs 1.34 lakh in fines. But since the offender, Elumalai, paid only Rs 10,000 and settled 20 cases, the Bengaluru Traffic Police impounded his Suzuki Access scooter, Deccan Herald reported.
The man, a daily wage labourer, had accumulated the violations for over two years and the police managed to nab him after going through lists of offenders who have had more than 50 violations.
As per the Deccan Herald report, Elumalai, was unaware of the Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) cameras installed near his house and had on multiple occasions over the past three years driven past the traffic cameras without wearing helmets.
A senior police officer told the publication that the police have been gathering data on vehicles with over 50 violations especially after the traffic fine payment system was digitised.
In a fresh attempt to crack down on traffic violators, the Bengaluru Police has recently started to notify companies if their employees’ are found breaking rules which include riding two-wheelers on the wrong side of the road. The police send a list of violations to each company, possibly trying to instill the fear of professional repercussions among offenders.
The initiative is currently underway across Bengaluru’s information technology corridor. The corridor houses prominent IT hubs like Sarjapur and Whitefield and falls under Mahadevapura traffic police division.
“We are just experimenting with this initiative to see if the riders become more conscious about the road safety and traffic rules,” said Mahadevapura traffic police Inspector Ramesh R. “As part of the initiative, when we catch hold of a violator, we check his identification card to identify his company. The traffic department is in touch with the companies and tech parks falling under our division.”
Mahadevapura added that when a person is caught breaking traffic rules, a “list of violations by the riders” is sent to their employer on WhatsApp. “We also issue online challans, not spot fines for violations,” he said.
