Bengaluru is home to the third largest number of philanthropists on Hurun’s top Philanthropist List 2023, accounting for 11 percent of the millionaires and billionaires on it.
Mumbai topped the list with 33 percent of the philanthropists, followed by Delhi at 16 percent.
About 13 philanthropists featured in the Hurun list live in Bengaluru.
They include Wipro's Azim Premji and family, Zerodha co-founders Nithin and Nikhil Kamath, Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani and wife and philanthropist Rohini Nilekani, Biocon's Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, and Mindtree's Susmita and Subroto Bagchi.
The list also featured Infosys's Kris Gopalakrishnan and family, Manipal Education and Medical's Ranjan Pai and family, Dilip and Anand Surana of Micro Labs, Infosys co-founders K Dinesh, SD Shibulal and family, and Ashok Soota of Happiest Minds Technologies.
The top donors from Bengaluru are as follows:
1.) Wipro's Azim Premji & family with Rs 1,774 crore in donations.
2.) Infosys co-founder Nandan Nilekani with Rs 189 crore in donations.
3.) Rohini Nilekani of Rohini Nilekani Philanthropies with Rs 170 crore in donations
4.) Susmita and Subroto Bagchi of Mindree with Rs 110 in donations.
5.) Zerodha co-founders Nithin and Nikhil Kamath donated Rs 110 crore to organisations dealing in climate change and environmental sustainability.
Also, 37-year-old Nikhil Kamath became the youngest philanthropist to make it to the list.
The Hurun report includes cash and cash equivalents pledged with legally binding commitments for the twelve months from April 1, 2022 to March 31, 2023, and the latest available CSR data filed with the Ministry of Corporate Affairs.
The brothers ranked 12 on the list which was topped by the chairperson of HCL Enterprise, Shiv Nadar, and family who donated Rs 2,042 crore to promote art and culture.
This also comes a year after Nikhil Kamath topped 'Hurun India 40 & under self-made rich list 2022' with a net worth of Rs 17,500 crore.
Earlier this year, the younger Kamath brother also became India’s youngest pledger for 'The Giving Pledge' founded by legendary investors Bill Gates and Warren Buffet. Members of this charitable foundation contribute a majority of their wealth to philanthropic causes.
