A government school teacher in Agra, who died of a heart attack last week after getting calls from conmen who posed as the police and claimed that her 20-year-old daughter was caught in a sex scandal, had received 10 calls in 15 minutes, her son revealed. The conmen had demanded an initial payment of Rs 1 lakh and had threatened to circulate one of her daughter's alleged videos if she did not pay up.
Malti Verma, 58, complained of anxiety and chest pain on September 30 after receiving the calls, Times of India reported. She was rushed to a hospital where she was declared dead due to cardiac arrest.
Narrating the incident, the junior high school teacher's son Deepanshu Rajput told the publication: "My mother taught at a junior high school in Agra's Achhnera. On Sept 30, she first got a WhatsApp call at noon, in which they said my sister was caught in a sex scandal and began threatening her with consequences. The caller posed as a police inspector and his profile picture showed him wearing a ‘khaki' uniform and a peaked cap. She thereafter received around 10 phone calls from them within 15 minutes."
Rajput said that when he checked the numbers he found out that they were from a different country code and he tried to convince his mother that they were scammers and that his sister was safe at her college. "I told my mother not to worry, but she was already tense and her health went down fast after those calls. As far as we know, she never had any heart-related issues. We waited for the final rites to be over and lodged a police complaint on Thursday," he said.
According to Agra City DCP Suraj Rai, a case has been filed under IT Act and an investigation is underway.
