Taiwanese chipmaker MediaTek has said it will provide the chipset for Sony's upcoming virtual reality (VR) headset the PlayStation VR 2.
The announcement was made at MediaTek's Executive Summit 2022, and this will be the first time MediaTek will provide its chip for a VR device.
Technology analyst Ming-Chi Kuo Tweeted in May that Sony would use MediaTek as a partner for the upcoming headset.
The PlayStation VR 2 is due out in February 2023 and is a follow-up to the well-received PlayStation VR, which was released in 2016 for Sony's PlayStation 4 game console. VR 2 will be exclusive to the PlayStation 5.
Sony has also priced the device much lower than the competition at $549.99. The VR 2 has an OLED display capable of 2000 x 2040 resolution per eye with a panel refresh rate of 90Hz - 120Hz.
It has adjustable lenses and a field of view of 110 degrees. It has a six-axis motion sensing system along with four cameras for head tracking and controller tracking plus two IR cameras for eye tracking.
The sense controllers for the device have haptic feedback and adaptive triggers like PlayStation 5 controllers.
