In a move that will swell Facebook's coffers, the social media giant is set to rollout advertisements on its Messenger service before the end of 2017.
The development was confirmed by Facebook through its Messenger blog.
User-targeted ads will appear on the home screen of the application, which acts as an inbox for recent conversation with Facebook friends and automated bots of pages.
Stan Chudnovsky, Messenger's head of products had also told VentureBeat that bringing ads to the Facebook Messenger home screen is a move to bring Facebook closer to its true business model.
The ads will follow the auction-based model and will feature the same user-targeting methods as seen on Facebook and Instagram, Chudnovsky said.
The tech giant had started beta testing the model in January in Australia and Thailand, where ads were sent to all Messenger users.
Facebook recently crossed the 2-billion users mark and now has around 1.2 billion monthly active users, making it one of the largest captive audiences. Facebook also has 60 million businesses linked to it.
In August 2016, Facebook's subsidy WhatsApp had announced that it will be sharing more user data with Facebook to let some companies send messages directly to those users.
