A while back, Microsoft launched a blog, which would highlight the progress of the upcoming Windows 8 operating system. The third post is up and it showcases one of the features - file management and transfer. Microsoft has been studying how users copy files, how often they copy files that take longer than 10 seconds to copy, and those taking lesser time than that. There are also 5 percent users who cancel file transfer. At present, the user interface seen during file transfers in Windows 7 is a simple status indicator that shows the approximate time remaining for the file transfer and also the speed. Microsoft is working on a new interface that shows all file transfer operations under one single user interface, so you don’t have to switch between different dialog windows for different file transfers.

Microsoft has acknowledged that there are a small fraction of users who use third-party add-ons such as Teracopy and FastCopy. The ability to pause and resume file transfers is also one of the new additions that you can expect in Windows 8. The interface will also sport a new graph that will show a more detailed view of transfer speeds through the operation. There are also changes in how Windows will offer you the option to overwrite or rename files. Instead of being asked for one image at a time, a thumbnail (if possible), along with details of the file replicas will also be displayed.
