A day before the winter session of Parliament, the Bharatiya Janata Party is going all out to strategise its tactics for what could be another stormy session.
A host of meeting are scheduled to be held on Wednesday. A day after his return from the two-nation trip, Prime Minister Narendra Modi will chair two meetings today. The NDA is expected to face stiff opposition in Parliament as it will try to push through important reforms.
Parliamentary Affairs Minister M Venkaiah Naidu has called an all-party meeting in the morning and Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan has also called a similar meeting in the evening.
The government has planned a heavy legislative agenda for the month-long session, including the key reform measure Goods and Service Tax, which commences on November 26 and concludes on December 23.
Minister of state for Finance Jayant Sinha has also expressed confidence that the GST will be rolled out April 1, 2016.
Sinha sid that the government is confident of having the backend in place for the landmark GST regime to be rolled out from April 1, 2016. It's the legislative hurdle which could play a spoilsport.
Sinha added that the government will have to maintain a fine balance between reducing the corporate tax rate and maintaining the fiscal target.
The last session of Parliament had seen a virtual washout of the proceedings in the wake of the Congress demand for the resignation of External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje in the Lalit Modi controversy and Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan in the Vyapam scam.
