What is UAN and why it matters
Universal Account Number (UAN) is a unique 12-digit number issued by the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) to every employee registered under the EPF scheme. UAN is an umbrella organization that has multiple Member IDs issued to an individual by different employers. UAN allows you to easily manage your PF account, view contributions, and withdraw or transfer even post a job change.
Step 1: Validate UAN through your employer
The simplest way to get your UAN is by inquiring with your current employer, especially if you are newly hired. Your salary slip typically states UAN. The majority of HR departments also pass on through joining documents. If you have changed companies, your new employer can go on to help you link the new Member ID to your existing UAN—providing a continuity of your EPF contributions without an interruption.
Method 2: Utilize the EPFO website
Go to the official EPFO UAN website: https://unifiedportal-mem.epfindia.gov.in. Click on 'Know your UAN' under the Important Links menu. Enter your registered mobile number linked with Aadhaar and PAN. An OTP will be sent to your registered mobile number for verification. Once
verified, your UAN will be displayed on the screen. This facility can also be availed if you have not yet activated your UAN.
Method 3: Through UMANG app
You may also get your UAN through the UMANG app. Download and go to the 'EPFO' option. Select 'Know your UAN'. Enter your Aadhaar-linked mobile number and continue with OTP verification. The UAN registered with your mobile will pop up. The UMANG app is government-endorsed and can be utilized for balance check, withdrawals, and claim status as well.
Idea 4: Check UAN through SMS or missed call
If your UAN is already activated, then you can verify it using your registered mobile number via SMS. Just send EPFOHO UAN to 7738299899 from your registered mobile. Or, dial a missed call
at 9966044425. You will get an SMS with your UAN and EPF balance details. Remember that these services are available only if your UAN is KYC-linked and Aadhaar-linked.
Last step: Activate your UAN online
After you receive your UAN, activate it on the EPFO Member Portal. You will need your UAN, name, date of birth, mobile number, and Member ID. Use these and create a password to log in to see your PF passbook, update KYC, or transfer claims. Activating your UAN and associating it with your mobile number and Aadhaar will keep your PF worry-free during your career years.
Stay connected to your PF anytime
Knowing and activating your UAN is key to managing your Provident Fund with ease, especially in today’s digital-first systems. Whether you’re checking contributions, withdrawing funds, or
updating details, your UAN is your gateway to seamless access. With multiple online and mobile methods now available, finding your UAN has never been easier.
