The Election Commission of India (ECI) has released the draft electoral roll for West Bengal, striking off over 58 lakh names after the first round of special intensive revision (SIR).
The draft electoral rolls published Tuesday show the state's electorate shrinking from around 7.66 crore voters to over 7.08 crore, after names were deleted on several grounds -- from death and permanent migration to duplication and non-submission of enumeration forms.
Constituency with the highest number of deletions
Among the state’s 294 assembly constituencies, the highest number of deletions has been witnessed in north Kolkata’s Chowringhee -- represented by TMC MLA Nayana Bandyopadhyay, wife of veteran party MP Sudip Bandyopadhyay, where 74,553 names have been struck off, around 35.45 per cent of its electorate of 2.10 lakh.
Followed by that is Jorashonko, where 72,900 names have been deleted out of the total 1.98 lakh voters when the SIR began.
With respect to absolute numbers, Kolkata stood third in name deletions, behind South 24-Parganas at 8.18 lakh and North 24-Parganas at 7.92 lakh.
Mamata Banerjee’s seat saw 4 times four deletions than Suvendu Adhikari’s
According to the data released by Election Commission, chief minister Mamata Banerjee’s Bhabanipur seat emerged as one of the most affected.
Bhabanipur recorded 44,787 deletions from 2,06,295 voters listed in January 2025 -- nearly four times the removals seen in leader of opposition Suvendu Adhikari's Nandigram, which logged 10,599 deletions from 2,78,212 voters.
In the 2021 assembly election, Adhikari defeated Banerjee in Nandigram by 1,956 votes, prompting her return to the assembly through a Bhabanipur bypoll, which she won by 58,832 votes.
What the EC data says
Following the special intensive revision (SIR) of voter lists in West Bengal, the Election Commission released the draft rolls on Tuesday, deleting 58,20,899 electors, or 7.59 per cent, on grounds of death, being untraceable, or permanent migration.
According to available data, the deletions include -- deceased voters: 24.16 lakh (3.15 per cent), shifted or absent voters: 32.65 lakh (4.26 per cent), and voters enrolled at multiple locations: 1.38 lakh (0.18 per cent).
The Election Commission has stated that the claims and objections window will remain open until January 15, 2026, urging voters to verify their details, as the SIR continues to be a key issue in Bengal's charged political landscape ahead of the next Assembly polls.
