Almost a year after its passage in the state Assembly, the Uttarakhand government is finally set to roll out the much-debated Uniform Civil Code this month, Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami said in an interaction with CNN-News18 in New Delhi on Friday.

"We promised this to the people of Uttarakhand in the 2022 polls. And with the formation of our government, we formed the committee...good news will come this month," he said.

Once implemented, Uttarakhand will earn the distinction of being the first Indian state to implement the law that seeks to put all citizens, regardless of their religion, under the same ambit of law.

"There are many departments involved. This was our promise to the people of Devbhoomi," Dhami said, reiterating that every citizen in Uttarakhand will have the same law now.
