Goa Chief Minister Manohar Parrikar has passed away at the age of 63 following a prolonged ailment.
Parrikar’s demise was announced by President Ram Nath Kovind via Twitter.
The Centre has announced national mourning on March 18 (tomorrow). Parrikar will be accorded a State funeral. The national flag will fly at half-mast in the National Capital and capitals of states and Union Territories.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has tweeted: “Shri Manohar Parrikar was an unparalleled leader. A true patriot and exceptional administrator, he was admired by all. His impeccable service to the nation will be remembered by generations. Deeply saddened by his demise. Condolences to his family and supporters. Om Shanti.”
Describing Parrikar as the “builder of modern Goa”, PM Modi has said that “Thanks to his affable personality and accessible nature, he remained the preferred leader of the state for years. His pro-people policies ensured Goa scales remarkable heights of progress.”
PM Modi has said that “India will be eternally grateful” to Parrikar for his tenure as the Defence Minister. “When he was RM (Raksha Mantri), India witnessed a series of decisions that enhanced India’s security capacities, boosted indigenous defence production and bettered the lives of ex-servicemen,” PM Modi said on Twitter.

The mortal remains of Manohar Parrikar are now being taken to Miramar beach for the last rites. The rituals will happennext to the memorial of Goa's first chief minister Dayanand Bandodkar, who was also cremated there.
Thousands of people are walking along with the gun carriage carrying Parrikar's mortal remains.
Stalemate on next Goa CM continues, says GFP chief Sardesai
The Goa Forward Party (GFP), an alliance partner in the state's BJP-led government has said that a stalemate persisted on the selection of the next chief minister.
Parrikar’s last rites will be performed at 5.00 pm at the Miramar beach in Goa, next to the memorial of Goa's first chief minister Dayanand Bandodkar, who was also cremated there. Parrikar is being accorded a state funeral with full military honours.

MGP's executive committee to decide on support to Goa govt
The Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP), an ally of the ruling BJP in Goa, said today that its executive committee would take a call on whether to continue its support to the state government.
MGP leader Sudin Dhavalikar met Union minister and senior BJP leader Nitin Gadkari at a hotel near Panaji to discuss the political situation in the state following the death of chief minister Parrikar.

No consensus yet on next Goa CM: BJP MLA
The BJP-led alliance in Goa did not reach a consensus over the next chief minister earlier today, a move necessitated by Parrikar’ demise.
Union minister and senior BJP leader Nitin Gadkari, who arrived here in the early hours of the day, could not secure a consensus between the saffron party and its alliance partners in the state, party MLA Michael Lobo said.
While Gadkari was not available for comments, BJP MLA Lobo said Maharashtrawadi Gomantak Party (MGP) MLA Sudin Dhavalikar wanted to be the chief minister due to which the discussions came to a halt. (PTI)
