Russia launched a scathing attack on the United States for its “neocolonial agenda”, saying Washington was “unable to accept the erosion of its dominance” and therefore resorting to “politically motivated” economic pressure on those countries who opt for “independent course” on the “international stage”.

“Sanctions and restrictions have unfortunately become a defining feature of the current historical period, impacting countries across the globe,” said Russian foreign ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova in response to a question on the imposition of US tariffs.

Moscow further said the US’ tariff approach is against the principles of free trade, which it once propagated. “Instead, we now witness politically driven protectionism and the arbitrary imposition of tariff barriers,” Zakharova said, adding that Brazil and the Caribbean were the victims of this policy. Moreover, these policies directly interfere with the internal affairs of other nations and represents “infringement” on their sovereignty, Russia said, adding that the tariff saga could “deepen” the fragmentation of international economic system.

“Nonetheless, we firmly believe that no tariff wars or sanctions can halt the natural course of history. We are supported by a vast number of partners, like-minded states, and allies, particularly among the countries of the Global South and, above all, within #BRICS, who share this perspective,” Zakharova said.
