Goa News Live: Couple held in Goa for killing 5-year-old girl to 'end' their woes
A couple has been arrested in Goa for allegedly killing a 5-year-old girl from their neighbourhood and burying the body in their backyard, an official said on Friday. Accused Babasaheb Alar (52) and his wife Pooja (45) have told the police that an occult practitioner had advised them to "sacrifice" a kid to “end” their woes, the official said.
Deputy Superintendent of Police (Ponda) Shivram Vaigankar told reporters that the parents of the child had complained that she went missing on Wednesday. CCTV footage showed that the kid entered the house of the accused but did not come out, said Vaigankar. During interrogation, the childless couple confessed to killing the girl on the advice of a person practising black magic, he said.

Karnataka State budget highlights
- Action has been taken to construct 15 women's colleges in vacant plots of Waqf institutions to support higher education of minority women in the year 2024-25. Further, 16 new women's colleges will be started during 2025-26.
- An amount of Rs.2 crore has been provided to create necessary infrastructure in the Gurudwaras of the State.
- A Buddhist Study Academy will be established in Bengaluru. The 100-year-old library at the Mahabodhi Study Centre in Bengaluru will be digitalized and upgraded at a cost of Rs. 1 crore.
- Grants worth Rs.100 crore have been earmarked for the Comprehensive development of Jain, Buddhist and Sikh communities. Rs.250 crore will be provided for the development of Christian community.
- The honorarium given to Jain priests, Chief Grantis of Sikhs and Pesh-Imams of mosques will be enhanced to Rs.6,000 per month. The honorarium given to Assistant Granti and Muezzin will be increased to Rs.5,000 per month.
- An additional building in Haj Bhavan at Bengaluru will be constructed to provide with facilities and amenities to Haj pilgrims and their relatives.

ED attaches Rs 65 cr properties linked to ex-GM of Sikkim bank in money laundering case
The Directorate of Enforcement (ED) has provisionally attached movable and immovable properties worth Rs 65.46 crore in connection with a money laundering case involving a former general manager-ranked officer of a Sikkim-based bank. The ED said in a statement that the attached assets include four residential properties and land parcels located in Deorali, Syari, Ranipool and Penlong - all in Sikkim. These properties were allegedly acquired using proceeds from fraudulent activities linked to siphoning of funds from the State Bank of Sikkim (SBS) by Dorjee Tshering Lepcha, its former general manager (operations).

Punjab Police on Friday said a major target killing in the state, which was planned by proscribed outfit Babbar Khalsa International (BKI)-backed terror module, was averted with the arrest of three people.
Punjab's Director General of Police Gaurav Yadav said preliminary probe found that the module was handled by US-based gangster Gurpreet Singh alias Gopi Nawashehria, a close aide of Pakistan-based terrorist Harwinder Singh Rinda, along with his associate Laadi Bakapuria, presently based in Greece.

A federal judge on Thursday gave the Trump administration until Monday to pay nearly $2 billion owed to partners of the U.S. Agency for International Development and the State Department, thawing the administration’s six-week funding freeze on all foreign assistance.
U.S. District Judge Amir Ali ruled in favor of nonprofit groups and businesses that sued over the funding freeze, which has forced organizations around the world to slash services and lay off thousands of workers. Ali’s line of questioning suggested skepticism of the Trump administration’s argument that presidents have wide authority to override congressional decisions on spending when it comes to foreign policy, including foreign aid.
“It would be an “earth-shaking, country-shaking proposition to say that appropriations are optional,” Ali said. “The question I have for you is, where are you getting this from in the constitutional document?” he asked a government lawyer, Indraneel Sur.
