The north-eastern state of Sikkim is electing its eighth Legislative Assembly.
Assembly polls in Sikkim were held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha election 2019, on April 11. The state has one Lok Sabha seat and 32 Assembly seats.
Since 1985, the state has been governed by stable governments — first led by Nar Bahadur Bhandari’s Sikkim Sangram Parishad and then by Pawan Kumar Chamling’s Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF).
Over the years, the Congress and other Opposition parties have been politically marginalised. In fact, in 2014, only nine Members of Legislative Assembly (MLAs) from the Opposition Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) were elected to the 32-member Assembly.
The central theme of the election will be CM Chamling fighting to win an uninterrupted sixth term in office. Chamling is already the longest-serving chief minister of any state in India.
Key parties in Sikkim politics are SDF, SKM, Congress and Humro Sikkim Party (HSP).
The Election Commission of India (EC) has conducted the 2019 Lok Sabha polls in seven phases. Counting of votes is happening today, on May 23.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and its National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners are hoping to retain power at the Centre. This is amid efforts by several Opposition parties, including Rahul Gandhi-led Congress, to put up a united fight. 'Others' or the 'third front' is also trying to wrest power.

SKM's tally has been constantly improving in the state, as it has now been declared winning 12 seats and is leading on two other seats. On the other hand, ruling SDF has secured victory in seven constituencies and is leading on five other seats.
BJP chief Amit Shah congratulated Pawan Chamling for "victory".
A neck and neck fight is undergoing in the state. The ruling SDF has secured 46.8% votes, while the main opposition party SKM has garnered 47.4% votes, said the trends available on the website of the Election Commission of India.

The status of 22 out of 32 Assembly seats are out in which the opposition party SKM has secured nine seats and is leading in three other seats. Ruling SDF has won four constituencies and is leading in six seats.
Pawan Chamling wins from Poklok Kamrang seat
Sikkim Chief Minister and Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) supremo Pawan Chamling has won the Poklok Kamrang Assembly seat, according to election officials.
Chamling defeated his nearest Sikkim Krantikari Morcha rival Kharka Bahadur Rai by 2,899 votes, they said.
He is also contesting from the Namchi Sinhithang seat where. Chamling is also leading from the seat.
Chamling has been the chief minister of Sikkim for more than 24 years since December 1994.
The opposition SKM has won seven Assembly constituencies and is leading in three other seats, while the ruling SDF has won two seats and is leading in five constituencies, as per the current trends available on the website of the Election Commission of India.
SKM candidate Lok Nath Sharma wins Gyalshing-barnyak Assembly seat by defeating Laxuman Sharma of SDF with a margin of 1,814 votes.
SDF candidate Tashi Thendup Bhutia wins Barfung Assembly seat by defeating Lobzang Bhutia of SKM with a margin of 97 votes.
The opposition SKM won five Assembly seat and is leading in four other constituencies while the ruling Sikkim Democratic Front is ahead in five as per the data available on Election Commission of India's website.
SKM candidate Sangay Lepcha wins Yoksam-tashiding Assembly seat by defeating Dichen Wangchuk Bhutia of SDF with a margin of 79 votes.
SKM candidate Mani Kumar Sharma wins Khamdong-singtam Vidhan Sabha seat by defeating Garjaman Gurung of SDF with a margin of 873 votes.
SKM candidate Sonam Lama wins Sangha Vidhan Sabha seatby defeating Tshering Lama of SDF with a margin of 630 votes.
The opposition SKM is now leading in eight Assembly seats while the ruling SDF in four constituencies as per current trends available on the website of the Election Commission of India.
SKM candidate Lok Nath Shara is leading against his nearest SDF rival Laxuman Sharma in the Gyalshing-barnyak seat.
The opposition Sikkim Krantikari Morcha (SKM) is leading in seven Assembly seats while the ruling Sikkim Democratic Front (SDF) in two constituencies as per current trends available on the website of the Election Commission of India.
According to the Election Commission of India, SKM is leading in five seats, while SDF is leading in two seats till 11.25 am.
SDF supremo and Chief Minister Pawan Kumar Chamling, who contested in Poklok Kamrang and Namchi Singhithang assembly constituencies, is leading in both the seats.
Looks like the SKM is catching up with the SDF. SKM is now leading in 5 seats against SDF's 6.
SDF continues to lead in 6 seats. The SKM is leading in 4 seats. Remember, the 'magic number' is 17.
Meanwhile, Indra Hang Subba of the Sikkim Krantikari Morcha is leading against his nearest rival Dek Bahadur Katwal of Sikkim Democratic Front by 455 votes in the lone Lok Sabha seat in Sikkim, officials said.
SDF candidates have taken an early lead in six out of 32 Assembly constituencies.
SDF's Pawan Chamling, Dichen Wangchuk Bhutia, Narendra Kumar Subba, Tashi Thendup Bhutia and Tshering Lama are leading in Poklok-Kamrang, Yoksam-Tashiding, Maneybung-Dentam, Barfung and Sangha Assembly constituencies, respectively.
