On Sunday, heavy rainfall and the Khadakwasla dam’s water release caused severe flooding in Pune’s residential areas, prompting the deployment of army personnel to manage the crisis. The Maharashtra government has issued urgent directives to ensure the safety of residents, with Chief Minister Eknath Shinde calling for heightened vigilance and immediate action.
The Khadakwasla, Mulshi, Pavana, and other dams in the Pune region began releasing water, exacerbating the flooding in low-lying neighborhoods. Chief Minister Shinde has directed officials to relocate those in flood-prone zones to safer locations with support from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), and the army if necessary.
“The India Meteorological Department has warned of continued heavy rains,” Shinde said. “We must ensure that people in risk areas are moved to safety and provided with necessary support, including shelter, food, and medical aid.”
The affected areas include Dattwadi, Ekta Nagar, Patil Estate, Yerwada, Shivaji Nagar, and others. The Chief Minister has emphasized that residents near rivers and dams should be swiftly relocated. Instructions have been given to district officials and the Pune Municipal Corporation to coordinate evacuation efforts and provide assistance.
The Khadakwasla dam, which released 35,000 cusecs of water on Sunday, has led to significant water accumulation, especially around Ekta Nagar and Dwarka Society on Sinhgad Road. The Indian Army's 01 Column has been stationed in Ekta Nagar to support evacuation and relief operations.
With continued heavy rains forecasted for the region, officials are closely monitoring the situation and preparing for further action.
