Progress in artificial intelligence not dependent on capital: Rajeev Chandrasekhar

A little-known Chinese startup, has sent shockwaves through the global tech sector with the release of an artificial intelligence (AI) model whose capabilities rival the creations of Google and OpenAI.

With the new Chinese artificial intelligence application 'DeepSeek' initiating a new discourse on the limits and potential of generative AI, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, former Union Minister, speaking to News 18, viewed the developments as a wakeup call for the technology industry. "DeepSeek has successfully started a new discourse on the potential of AI," remarked the former Union minister.

The former IT minister added that the progress of artificial intelligence is not dependent on capital. It will be dependent on an  interplay of innovation and analytics. China’s AI assistant has become the most top-rated and downloaded free app in the US. As US imposes curbs on advanced semiconductor exports to China, DeepkSeek’s breakthrough raises questions about the future of America’s dominance on artificial intelligence.

The Chinese model, which comes as an alternative to OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Google’s Gemini, unlike its US counterparts fully relies on open-source technology and lower-end chips. Developed at a cost of just $5.6 million, it sidesteps the need for high-end hardware restricted by US export controls. Simply put, DeepSeek is available at a cost, which is 2% of what users would spend on OpenAI’s O1 model.
