More than 13,500 police personnel have been deployed across Mumbai ahead of Ram Navami celebrations to ensure peace and prevent any untoward incidents, a senior official said on Saturday.
Ram Navami, which marks the birth of Lord Ram, will be observed on Sunday. The festival, celebrated on the ninth day (Navami) of the Chaitra month in the Hindu calendar, typically sees large public gatherings and religious processions.
The heightened security comes in the backdrop of recent communal tensions, including a clash in Nagpur on March 17. Authorities are anticipating significant crowd turnout across the city.
“The deployment comprises 11,000 constables, 2,500 officers, 51 Assistant Commissioners of Police (ACPs), and 20 Deputy Commissioners of Police (DCP). Nine State Reserve Police Force (SRPF) platoons will also be manning Mumbai’s streets apart from other specialised units,” the official said.
“All efforts are being taken to ensure no untoward incident is reported on Ram Navami,” he added.
Police presence has been ramped up particularly along routes of major processions and at sensitive spots identified by the city’s security apparatus. The official said the police force is on high alert and working in coordination with local authorities to maintain communal harmony.
