NDA, INDIA bloc spar in Bihar over SC order on electoral rolls

The ruling NDA and the opposition INDIA bloc in Bihar on Thursday locked horns over interpreting the Supreme Court’s order on a batch of petitions challenging the special intensive revision (SIR) of electoral rolls ahead of Assembly elections.

The apex court on Thursday asked the Election Commission to consider Aadhaar, Voter ID and ration cards as valid documents during SIR in Bihar, set to go to polls later this year.

The top court also permitted the ECI to continue with the exercise, calling SIR a "constitutional mandate".

CPI(ML) general secretary Dipankar Bhattacharya, a key opposition leader in the state who is also one of the petitioners, came out with a statement claiming “the Supreme Court order corroborates the basic fears and objections of the electorate”.
