Mumbai Rains News Highlights: After a brief spell of reduced intensity, the rains picked up the pace again in Mumbai, causing inundation in some areas. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a red alert in the financial capital yesterday as heavy rains lashed the city during the last night and continued today morning after a major thunderstorm pummeled Mumbai, causing severe water-logging and traffic disruptions in the financial capital. At least 30 people have died and five others have been injured in rain-related incidents. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed anguish at the loss of lives caused by wall collapse incidents in Mumbai due to heavy rains. His office has also announced Rs two lakh each for the next of kin of the deceased from the Prime Minister's National Relief Fund. A sum of Rs 50,000 would be given to the injured. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy to very heavy rain in north India, including New Delhi, over the next two days. In Mumbai, the IMD has issued a heavy rain and thunderstorm alert for the city and surrounding districts. At least 30 people were killed on Sunday in three Mumbai suburbs when several houses collapsed in landslides after rain. At least three people were also killed when a house collapsed in the northern state of Uttarakhand after a downpour, Reuters partner agency ANI reported. In a separate incident on Sunday evening, a three-storey building collapsed in the city of Gurugram, bordering Delhi. Two people were killed and rescue operations were still underway. Several low-lying areas of Delhi and Mumbai were flooded and Twitter was filled with images of submerged vehicles and people wading through waist-deep water. Mumbai's water treatment plant in the suburbs was flooded on Sunday forcing the municipal council to impose water cuts in some parts of the city. India is in the midst of its annual rainy season but the downpours over the past few days have been particularly heavy. Extreme weather has hit several parts of the world in recent weeks with flooding in Europe, dam collapses in China and heatwaves in North America adding to worries about climate change.

Mumbai rains have been heavier since last weekend and looks like a similar situation is expected to persist in the coming days as well.In the last 24 hours from 8:30 am yesterday, Santa Cruz in Mumbai recorded 70 mm of rains. However, it was the suburbs which recorded very heavy rains with 285 mm in Thane.As per weathermen, more showers are expected to come up over Mumbai in the next 24 to 48 hours as well, remaining heavy in between.So far, Mumbai has recorded 1881 mm of rains between June 1 and July 19, which is about 851 mm over and above the normal rains as of today. Looking at the forecast, more heavy showers are expected, courtesy a low pressure area which is expected to form over Bay of Bengal. Thus, the Monsoon current is expected to pick up again along the West Coast including Konkan and Goa region.Thus, tomorrow as well, heavy showers may be seen. Moreover, on and off rainfall activity is likely to be seen through the week with intensity varying in nature. Mid week is expected to see heavier showers.With these Mumbai rains, the city is not only likely to see record rains in July alone but it seems like rains will be enough to even cater for the remaining two monsoon months as well, which is a rare scenario. Heavy rains caused a landslide in Maharashtra's Raigad district today, but there was no report of any casualty, according to officials. The district recorded an average rainfall of 186.51 mm in the 24-hour period ending at 8.30 am on the day, they said. While Panvel town in the district recorded the maximum downpour of 284.2 mm, Mahad had the minimum rainfall at 89 mm during the same period, the district administration said in a release.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had earlier issued an "orange alert" for Mumbai today, predicting "heavy to very heavy rain at few places". According to BMC officials, there is a forecast of moderate to heavy rain/thundershowers in the city and suburbs with the possibility of very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall in isolated places. Alerts by the IMD are colour-coded from green to red. A 'green' alert stands for 'no warning': no action needs to be taken by the authorities, and the forecast is of light to moderate rain. A 'red' alert stands for "warning", and asks authorities to "take action". An orange' alert indicates that the authorities are expected to be prepared. (PTI)

In the Kasara Ghat section, located about 130 km from Mumbai, a mudslide occurred on one of the three rail lines early Monday morning, Central Railway's chief spokesperson Shivaji Sutar said.

A day after heavy showers battered Mumbai, the rain intensity reduced briefly today morning and has picked up momentum again, leading to water-logging at some places and disrupting local train services. Local train services of the Central Railway were affected due to water-logging on tracks between Vikhroli and Bhandup following heavy showers in parts of the suburbs, CR's chief spokesperson Shivaji Sutar said. The suburban train services were suspended in that section of the main line from 10.35 am to 10.50 am as a precautionary measure, he said. (PTI)

Mumbai's neighbouring Palghar district also witnessed heavy showers and received 108.67 mm downpour during the last night and today morning, authorities said. Firemen and disaster cell teams received several calls of tree falls and inundation in both the districts, an officials said. In Palghar, several places in Vasai and Nallasopara witnessed heavy rains, leading to water-logging in low-lying areas. A four-year-old boy fell in an open drain in Nallasopara and was feared drowned. Efforts were on to trace the minor, Vasai-Virar Municipal Corporation's chief fire officer Dilip Palav said. In Vasai area of Palghar, at least 80 cooking gas cylinders were washed away in the flood waters, local police said. Later, the police with the help of firemen shifted the cylinders to a safe place, they said. (PTI)

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has asked citizens to boil water before drinking as heavy rains over the last two days had led to flooding in the water purification complex at Bhandup. The flooding has affected electrical equipment that control the pumping and filtration processes there, one of the major sites of water supply to the country's financial capital, he said.
