A three-storey building collapsed in Zakir Colony, Meerut district, Uttar Pradesh, on Saturday, resulting in nine fatalities till now, five injuries, and one person feared trapped under the debris. The collapse occurred around 4:30 pm, prompting immediate alerts to emergency services. The injured were taken to Lala Lajpat Rai Memorial Medical College for treatment.
District Magistrate Deepak Meena confirmed the incident, noting that the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), fire brigade, and police are actively involved in rescue operations.
"The incident occurred around 4:30 pm in the Zakir colony area of Meerut. As told by the family and relatives, 15 people were trapped in the debris of the house. All 15 have been rescued, 10 out of which have died and 5 are undergoing treatment... The area has been sealed and debris is being cleared. The rescue operation will go on till we find no possibility of any human life in the debris," further added Meena.
The deceased have been identified as Sajid (40), his children Saniya (15), Saqib (11), Simra (1.5 years), Reeza (7), Naffo (63), Farhana (20), Alisa (18), and Aliya (6). Sofiyan (6) is reported to be in stable condition, while Naeem (22), Nadeem (26), Saqib (20), and Saina (38) are receiving treatment.
Senior officials, including Meerut Zone Additional Director General of Police DK Thakur, Divisional Commissioner Selva Kumari J, Inspector General of Police Nachiketa Jha, and Senior Superintendent of Police Vipin Tada, are overseeing the rescue efforts. The area has been sealed, and the rescue operation will continue until all possible survivors are accounted for.
