Air India and IndiGo on Tuesday suspended their flights between Delhi and Kathmandu after Nepal’s Tribhuvan International Airport was temporarily shut amid escalating anti-government protests that ended in the resignation of Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli.
Air India confirmed that services on the Delhi-Kathmandu-Delhi route, including flights AI2231/2232, AI2219/2220, AI217/218 and AI211/212, were cancelled.
“In view of the current situation prevailing in Kathmandu, flights have been cancelled today. We are closely monitoring the developments and will share further updates,” the airline said.
IndiGo also issued a travel advisory, announcing that all operations to and from Kathmandu were suspended.
“Impacted passengers may opt for alternate flights or claim refunds via our website. We are coordinating with local authorities to resume services at the earliest,” it said, urging travellers to check official channels for updates.
Nepal witnessed massive anti-government protests lately, fuelled by public anger over governance failures, economic hardships, and corruption allegations.
The unrest intensified in Kathmandu, forcing the airport to suspend operations for safety reasons.
Oli, who previously served multiple terms as prime minister, was facing criticism for failing to address inflation, unemployment, and deepening political instability.
The closure of Kathmandu airport has disrupted hundreds of passengers, including tourists and Nepalese citizens returning from abroad.
Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu issued a precautionary advisory for Indian nationals in Nepal and urged citizens stay in touch with the embassy for assistance.
