The initiative, billed as a pathbreaking initiative, envisages vast road, railroad and shipping networks among India, Saudi Arabia, the United States and Europe with an aim to ensure integration among Asia, Middle East and West. The multi-national infrastructure initiative also aims to create an alternative to China's Belt and Road Initiative (BRI).

“The project is vital for bilateral interests, enhancing strategic supply chains and boosting security in economic, energy, and health sectors across India, Europe, and the Middle-East,” PM Modi stated as he answered questions from the French press. The Prime Minister also stressed on the importance of ports within the IMEC initiative.
