The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet has extended the tenure of the State Bank of India (SBI) Chairman Dinesh Khara for a period beyond October 2023 till he attains 63 years of age.
The ACC has also extended the tenure of SBI MD Ashwini Tewari for a period of two years.
Moneycontrol had earlier reported citing government sources that the tenure of the SBI Chairman has been extended till August 28, 2024 and that the extension has been approved by the PMO.
Khara was appointed as SBI's chairman on October 7, 2020, for three years. As per norms, the SBI chairman can hold the position till the age of 63.
The seasoned banker joined SBI as a probationary officer in 1984 and has experience across all verticals of banking such as Retail Credit, SME and Corporate Credit, deposit mobilisation, international banking operations and branch management.
Khara is known as a general banking specialist within SBI circles. Apart from this, during his stint in the overseas expansion wing, Khara was posted at the bank’s Chicago office and was associated with the overseas acquisition of Indian Ocean International Bank Mauritius.
Khara holds a Masters in Business Administration from FMS New Delhi and is a post-graduate in Commerce. He is also a Certified Associate of the Indian Institute of Bankers (CAIIB).
