Amid row over his post which was seen as praising the BJP and its ideological mentor, the RSS, Congress leader Digvijaya Singh on Saturday said he is against the Sangh's ideology because it does not follow the Constitution.
However, hours after his post, the Congress leader praised the RSS' organisational strength once again, saying its workers could sell a comb to a bald man, according to a report by NDTV.
He also issued a clarification as his remark snowballed into a controversy. He told reporters that he had only praised the organisation, but he would continue opposing the BJP and RSS.
Digvijaya's post sparks rift rumors
The rumors about rift within the Congress sparked the Rajya Sabha MP shared a throwback image of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and praised the organisational strength of the BJP and RSS.
The former Madhya Pradesh chief minister's post was interpreted by many as a pointed message at the Congress leadership as the party held a meeting of its working committee (CWC), its highest decision-making body.
The senior Congress leader shared an old photo of Modi from the 1990s when he was just a normal karyakarta (party worker). In the throwback image, a young Modi is seen sitting on the floor near BJP veteran LK Advani, who is seated on a chair. The picture, which Singh called "impactful", was from an event in Gujarat.
Known for his outspoken views, Singh highlighted how a grassroots worker who once sat on the floor could grow within the RSS-BJP organisation and become the Chief Minister and then the Prime Minister.
"I found this picture on Quora. It is very impactful. How an RSS grassroots swayamsevak and a Jana Sangh/BJP worker, who once sat on the floor at the feet of leaders, went on to become the Chief Minister of a state and the Prime Minister of the country. This is the power of organisation. Jai Siya Ram," the Rajya Sabha MP posted on X.
This came a week after he wrote to the Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi over the need for reforms within the party.
BJP reacts
The BJP targeted Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi over Singh's tweet. Party spokesperson CR Kesavan said that Singh's comment has exposed the "autocratic and undemocratic" Congress leadership.
"Will Rahul Gandhi show courage & react to the shocking Truth Bomb dropped by Shri. Digvijaya Singh's tweet which has totally exposed how Congress first family ruthlessly runs the party in a dictatorial manner and also how autocratic & undemocratic this Congress leadership is? (sic)" he said in an X post.
"Digvijaya Singh openly dissents against Rahul Gandhi," Pradeep Bhandari, another BJP spokesperson, mocked.
