Cyclone Tauktae Highlights: Cyclone Tauktae has now weakened into a "cyclonic storm" and will gradually become a "deep depression" as it moves northwards, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has said. The cyclone, which pummelled parts of Gujarat, killed as many as 13 people and left behind a trail of destruction along the coast, uprooting electric poles, trees and damaging thousands of houses and roads, officials said yesterday. In what was one of the worst cyclones faced by Gujarat, it triggered heavy rains in many parts along its way from the Saurashtra coast to North Gujarat. In Maharashtra, cyclone Tauktae claimed at least three lives and left 10 others injured in Mumbai when it passed close to the city coast. The cyclonic storm is now expected to cause heavy rains in seven districts of Rajasthan today (May 19), weather officials said.

Battling tidal waves as high as 10 metres and strong winds while trying to stay afloat in the cyclone-hit rough Arabian Sea for almost 12 hours, workmen rescued from a sinking barge near Mumbai narrated theirhorrifying experience in their quest for survival. Some of them said they had almost lost the hope ofmaking it alive back home. The warship INS Kochi arrived in Mumbai todaywith 125 workmen rescued from barge P305, an accommodation barge that sank amid the cyclone Tauktae fury.Of the 273 people on the ill-fated barge, 184 have been rescued so far by the Indian Navy. Cyclone Tauktae has triggered heavy rains in southern districts of Rajasthan in the last 24 hours while it is expected to weaken in the next 12 hours, Met officials said today. The cyclonic storm entered southern Rajasthan late last night causing heavy rains in the region and it was centred 60 km southwest of Udaipur today morning, a spokesman of the regional Meteorological Department said. In the next 12 hours, the cyclone is expected to weaken and turn into a low pressure area and move to northeast Rajasthan, he said. The cyclone caused 'heavy' to 'very heavy' rainfall at some places in the southern districts of the state in the last 24 hours, as per the Met department. (PTI)

As many as 45 people have been killed due to cyclone Tauktae across 12 districts of Gujarat, officials said today. Fifteen deaths were reported from Amreli district in Saurashtra region, the worst affected in the cyclone that crossed the state coast as an extremely severe cyclonic stormon Monday night and completed landfall around 1.30 am yesterday, officials said.Eight people each were killed in Bhavnagar and Gir Somnath coastal districts, an official of the State EmergencyOperation Centre said. Five were killed in Ahmedabad, two in Kheda, and oneeach in Anand, Vadodara, Surat, Valsad, Rajkot, Navsari and Panchmahal districts, the official said.While 24 deaths were due to wall collapses during the cyclone, six died after trees fell on them, five each becauseof house collapse and electrocution, four due to roof collapse and one died due to a tower collapse, the official said. Cyclone Tauktae weakened into a "depression" and lay centred over south Rajasthan and adjoining Gujarat region on Wednesday morning, the India Meteorological Department said. After causing widespread rain in Gujarat, the cyclone is expected to bring showers in many other states also, including Rajasthan, Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh and Delhi, due to its interaction with the western disturbance, the IMD said. The cyclonic "depression" was located around 60 km west-southwest of Udaipur in Rajasthan, and 110 km of Deesa in Gujarat, the IMD said in its morning bulletin.

As Cyclone Tauktae weakens further, its after-effects will bring moderate rains to several parts of north India, including Delhi-NCR, over the next two days, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said yesterday. Kuldeep Srivastava, Head of the Regional Meteorological Centre of the IMD, said Cyclone Tauktae has brought rains to southern Rajasthan as it approaches north India. "Tomorrow, it will stretch from Rajasthan to Haryana. Due to this, east and west Uttar Pradesh, east Rajasthan, the Delhi-NCR region will witness moderate rain. The cyclonic storm Tauktae could cause heavy rains in seven districts of Rajasthan today, weather officials have said. The seven districts likely to bear the brunt of it are Jalore, Sirohi, Udaipur, Pali, Dungarpur, Chittorgarh and Rajsamand in the southern part of the state, said Radhey Shyam Sharma, regional director of the meteorological department. Rainfall is also expected in parts of the Jaipur division, said Sharma.
