Coronavirus India News LIVE Updates: Today is the seventieth day of India’s nationwide lockdown, meant to curb the novel coronavirus pandemic. The Health Ministry said today that the recovery rate in India is increasing, and has reached 48.19 percent.
The Centre has extended the lockdown, now called 'Unlock 1', till June 30. A number of activities will be allowed to resume in a phased manner over this month.
Confirmed COVID-19 cases in India stand at 1,98,706. The death toll from the outbreak in India is at 5,598. Maharashtra, Tamil Nadu, Delhi and Gujarat have reported the highest number of cases.
Globally, there have been over 62.7 lakh confirmed cases of COVID-19. At least 3.7 lakh people have died so far. The United States, Brazil, Russia, the United Kingdom and Spain are the most-affected countries.

Coronavirus impact | Hassled students seek room-rent waivers, want government to intervene
Across social media, students who have not been able to pay room rent at paying guest facilities and hostels have appealed to the state governments to allow three to six months of waiver.
The students' justification is that the PG/hostel premises have not been occupied since March and the financial impact of lockdown restrictions on their families has been huge, with their parents either forced to take pay cuts or handed pink slips.

Neighbourhood departmental stores and small shops could bounce back faster with higher sales and transactions in comparison to organised retail, as the country slowly opens up after months of lockdown due to COVID-19.

Japan's government has said it has approved saliva-based tests for COVID-19, offering a safer, simpler way to diagnose infection than nasal swabs as it looks to boost its testing rates.

Physical distancing, masks, eye protection may help prevent COVID-19: Lancet study
Physical distancing of two metres or more can prevent person-to-person transmission of COVID-19, according to a comprehensive review of studies published in The Lancet journal. The study has also found that face masks and eye protection may decrease the risk of infection too.
The systematic review of existing evidence was commissioned by the WHO, researchers said.
