The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), on Saturday, criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi’s ongoing visit to four South American countries, claiming he is attempting to build a “global alliance” against India and suggesting billionaire George Soros may be influencing him.
BJP spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari, taking to microblogging site X, questioned the purpose of Gandhi’s visit, writing, “Rahul Gandhi goes on yet another foreign visit! Rahul Gandhi departs to South America! Wonder who will be the next anti-India element that Rahul will meet behind closed doors!”
Bhandari alleged that Gandhi seeks to “fight the Indian state and Indian democracy” and is building a global network to achieve it. He pointed to the arrest of activist Sonam Wangchuk under the National Security Act, suggesting the timing of Gandhi’s trip was suspicious.
Bhandari also referred to Gandhi’s past meetings with foreign politicians, such as US Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, and claimed he received endorsements from Khalistani elements like terrorist Pannu.
"In the past, he has asked for foreign interference in Indian democracy, met anti-India elements like Ilhan Omar, and even got the endorsement of Khalistani terrorist Pannu", he wrote.
“Note the timing: Just after his ideological anarchist Sonam Wangchuk has been arrested under the NSA, Rahul Gandhi has departed!” Bhandari wrote.
The Congress, responding to Bhandari's allegations, clarified that Gandhi’s South America visit is aimed at strengthening diplomatic, democratic, and trade ties. He will travel to Brazil and Colombia, engaging with university students, business leaders, and senior political figures across multiple countries.
As per the Congress, Gandhi’s itinerary includes meetings with presidents and senior leaders to reinforce strategic relationships, as well as discussions with business leaders to explore opportunities amid global economic challenges such as US tariffs.
Gandhi is also expected to interact with university students in Brazil, Colombia, and other countries, fostering dialogue with the next generation of global leaders.
