One killed in Bangladesh as Hindu protesters clash with police
At least one person was killed in Bangladesh in clashes between security forces and Hindus protesting against the arrest of a religious leader, police said, even as neighbouring India urged that the safety of Hindus and minorities be ensured.
Chinmoy Krishna Das, a Hindu leader associated with the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON), was arrested from Dhaka airport on Monday on several charges, including sedition.
His arrest sparked protests by his supporters in both the capital Dhaka and Chittagong city.
"A Muslim lawyer defending Das was killed amid protests outside the court (in Chittagong)," said police officer Liaquat Ali.
A probe has been ordered into the alleged killing, the caretaker government said in a statement, adding that Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus had directed law enforcement agencies to step up security in the port city.
"The interim government is committed to ensuring and upholding communal harmony in Bangladesh at any cost," the government said.
Alphabet gets CCI's clearance to acquire stake in Flipkart
The Competition Commission on Tuesday granted approval to Alphabet’s arm Shoreline International Holdings LLC to acquire a stake in Walmart group firm Flipkart.
Shoreline International Holding is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Google’s parent firm Alphabet Inc. It is a holding company and does not own or operate any Google products or services.
"The proposed transaction comprises an investment through subscription of shares of Flipkart Pvt Ltd (Target) by Shoreline International Holdings LLC (Acquirer) and an arrangement between an affiliate of the acquirer and the target’s subsidiary for the provision of certain services," the regulator said in a release.

New rule allows HIV-positive organ transplants
People with HIV who need a kidney or liver transplant will be able to receive an organ from a donor with HIV under a new rule announced Tuesday by U.S. health officials.
Previously, such transplants could be done only as part of research studies. The new rule, which takes effect Wednesday, is expected to shorten the wait for organs for all, regardless of HIV status, by increasing the pool of available organs.
“This rule removes unnecessary barriers to kidney and liver transplants, expanding the organ donor pool and improving outcomes for transplant recipients with HIV," said U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Xavier Becerra in a statement.

UN rights chief 'gravely concerned' by Lebanon escalation
The U.N. rights chief on Tuesday voiced concern about the escalation of hostilities in Lebanon, where his office said nearly 100 people had been reported killed by Israeli airstrikes in recent days, including women, children and medics.
Israel has been locked in fighting with Lebanese armed group Hezbollah since Oct. 2023, and fighting has escalated dramatically since late September of this year.
"UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk is gravely concerned by the escalation in Lebanon with at least 97 people reportedly killed in Israeli airstrikes between the 22nd and 24th of November," Jeremy Laurence, a spokesperson for the Office of the High Commissioner of Human Rights, told a Geneva press briefing.
SC asks Centre, states to expedite steps to fill vacancies in CIC, SICs
Taking serious note of vacancies in the Central Information Commission (CIC) and state information commissions (SICs), the Supreme Court on Tuesday asked the Centre and the state governments to apprise it about the steps taken to fill up the posts.
A bench of Justices Surya Kant and Ujjal Bhuyan said the states that have initiated the process of filling up the vacant posts should complete the process within four weeks.
Pointing out that there are eight vacancies in CIC out of the 11 sanctioned posts including that of chief information commissioner, the bench asked Additional Solicitor General Brijender Chahar, appearing for the Centre, to file an affidavit within two weeks about the steps taken to fill up the vacancies.

Meerut man beaten, urinated on camera last year, dies
A 23-year-old man, who was allegedly thrashed and urinated on by some people in Meerut last year, died on Tuesday after having a drinking session with his friends at a hotel, police said.

A court in far eastern Russia sentenced a journalist to four years in prison Tuesday for cooperating with a foreign organization.
The Zabaikalsky Regional Court in Chita said Nika Novak, 24, had been found guilty of cooperating with a representative from a foreign media outlet “on whose instructions, for monetary compensation, she assisted in the preparation of false materials discrediting the Armed Forces of Russia and government agencies.”
The court said Novak’s actions were aimed at causing reputational damage to Russia and destabilizing the country. The human rights organization Memorial has described Novak as a political prisoner.

Police suspect that 5,500 kg of Methamphetamine seized from trawler near Andamans meant for Thailand
The Andaman and Nicobar Command and the police suspect that the 5,500 kg of banned Methamphetamine drug seized from a fishing trawler with six Myanmarese crew from near Barren island was supposed to be delivered to Thailand, officials said on Tuesday.
The police are trying to get the call record of the satellite phone seized from the trawler which was coming from Myanmar, an official said.
"We are trying to get details of the recipients of the drugs through the seized satellite phone call detail record because the crew members are refusing to reveal anything during interrogation. It seems that they are scared to reveal the identity of the receiver and the person behind sending the consignments. We are trying to get in touch with the service provider to get the call detail record," the officer said.
The huge consignment of Methamphetamine drug was supposed to be delivered in Thailand and could be part of drug cartels, police sources said.
