‘Bihar SIR can be set aside if…’: Supreme Court on pleas against EC drive

The EC is correct in saying Aadhaar cannot be accepted as conclusive proof of citizenship. It has to be verified, says Justice Kant.

The Supreme Court on Tuesday said the results of the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in Bihar can be set aside even if any illegality is established as late as September.

The top court was hearing a bunch of pleas challenging the SIR of electoral rolls in Bihar being conducted by the Election Commission (EC), ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in the state.

The hearing has been extended to Wednesday.

The top court on Tuesday endorsed the EC view that Aadhaar should not be considered conclusive proof of citizenship, stating that it must be independently verified. A bench of Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi was hearing petitions on the SIR of the Bihar electoral roll.
