Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to hand over 15,000 affordable homes in India's largest Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) scheme in Maharashtra's Solapur district next month, Valsa Nair Singh, Additional Chief Secretary, Housing Department of Maharashtra, announced on September 15.
"The biggest housing scheme for the economically weaker section is now in the final stages of being built at a place called Ray Nagar in Solapur. The PM is coming next month to inaugurate it," Singh said.
"We have 15,000 houses on the ground, and for another 15,000 houses, work has started. Every house is 300 sq ft, and people who earn less than Rs 3 lakh (per annum) are eligible."
The PMAY project includes 30,000 homes spread over 100 acres, where each unit costs around Rs 6 lakh.

The houses will be allotted free of cost to beedi workers, textile mill workers, rag-pickers, and construction workers, according to the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA), the nodal agency of PMAY in Maharashtra.
Solapur is a town located near Pune, the IT hub of Maharashtra.
New housing policy
Speaking at the real estate forum organised by NAREDCO, an apex body of real estate developers, Singh said that the Maharashtra government is working on a new housing policy to ensure innovation, smart housing, and other new-age concepts like walk-to-work.

"We are also thinking of giving incentives for senior citizen housing and student housing that need to be supported. We have taken the views and opinions of all stakeholders and have also asked various departments and developers to give their suggestions. After a comprehensive policy is worked out, we will release it to the public for suggestions and opinions," Singh added.
