Applying for a second credit card may be the obvious next step after paying off your first, but applying too soon can have some unexpected effects. When you're requesting a new card, the lender makes a hard inquiry on your credit report. That may drop your credit score temporarily.

Additionally, when there are consecutive multiple applications, it may alert banks that you're in a cash flow issue, and hence, they will not approve your application.

The best waiting time: 3 to 6 months

Money lenders and credit organizations typically recommend a wait time of at least three to six months before getting the second credit card. Waiting during this time helps your first card establish a history of payments, improve your utilization ratio, and demonstrate responsible behaviour on your account. If you've paid bills on time, maintained a low balance, and never defaulted, lenders will tend to view you as a good borrower and may offer more beneficial terms on your next card, such as better rewards or a higher credit limit.
