Tech Mahindra CEO and MD Mohit Joshi said that the IT services major is currently developing an indigenous sovereign large language model (LLM) with 1 trillion parameters as a part of IndiaAI Mission.
Tech Mahindra along with seven other entities including Fractal Analytics, and BharatGen - an IIT Bombay Consortium, were picked by the Government of India in September to build foundational LLMs under IndiaAI Mission.
Not just Tech Mahindra, even the LLM proposed to be developed by IIT Bombay is expected to have 1 trillion parameters.
In LLM parlance, 'parameters' refer to number of learned internal variables — or biases — that capture patterns and relationships in language from training data.
Speaking at Tech Mahindra’s earnings conference for the second quarter ended September, Joshi said, “We are honoured to have been recognised by the government of India as the key player for the prestigious IndiaAI Mission. This aligns with the government’s objectives to bolster leadership in AI…as a part of mission, we are partnering to develop an indigenous sovereign large language model with 1 trillion parameters, which is a significant technical milestone.”
“This places it among the largest AI models under development globally. This vision aligns seamlessly with the commitment to unlock transformation, drive productivity, and accelerate innovation and to ensure assurance through our AI delivered right strategy,” he added.
Tech Mahindra announced its Q2 earnings on October, 14 reporting 4.5% decline in net profit at Rs 1,195 crore for the quarter ended September 30, 2025.
However, the firm's revenue from operations rose 5.1% to Rs 13,995 crore in Q2FY26, aided by strength in its banking and manufacturing verticals despite US tariff-related uncertainty and mounting risks from a tightening US visa regime.
On sequential basis, Tech Mahindra's net profit and revenue rose 4.7% and 4.8%, respectively.
