The government is working on a multi-country, consensus-based declaration on artificial intelligence, specifically on ways to mitigate risks and fostering innovation, electronics and information technology minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on December 11, a day ahead of the Global Partnership on Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Summit.
"We are negotiating a declaration document which we hope that we will be able to arrive at some consensus,” the minister told mediapersons on the eve of the summit to be held in New Delhi from December 12-14.
The world's thinking on AI was kind of converging. People understand the dangers, the potential, benefit and also entire world wants to put certain guardrails, the minister said.
The declaration would have a lot of similarities with similar communique such as the Bletchley Declaration, a which was arrived at a consensus by countries participating in the UK AI Safety Summit in November.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the GPAI Summit for which around 30 countries have been invited, including 29 GPAI members and other countries such as UAE.
India is the chair of GPAI for this year after taking over from France in November.
"This will be a very large congregation in which startups, policymakers and academia will be there; lots of products and solutions will be displayed. And there will be many technical sessions on how to make AI more responsible, how to make sure that we a convergence in the thought process on AI; how to have proper balance regulations, and so on," Vaishnaw said.
