The Union Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation (MOSPI) has devised a five-year plan, likely to be launched in 2025, creating a roadmap for the ministry until 2029, sources told Moneycontrol.
“We are ready with the plan for the next five years,” a person aware of the development said, noting that the ministry will focus on coordination with states and artificial intelligence and machine learning.
Moneycontrol had earlier reported that one of the document's primary focus areas is likely to incorporate artificial intelligence and machine learning and strengthen the technology base.
The ministry is looking to use computer-assisted personal interview methods for all its surveys and also leveraging technology to ensure data integrity.
Besides AI/ML, another focus area, sources said, would be strengthening statistical systems at the district level in conjunction with states and finding new data sources to align with administrative statistics.
For instance, the ministry is planning to use Goods and Services Tax data for refining its value-added statistics. It is also trying to tap e-commerce platforms for tracking online price data.
The earlier document, which covered the period from 2019 until 2024, worked on three broad themes: Strengthening statistical infrastructure for real-time monitoring of the economy, launching an integrated information portal and strengthening the monitoring of large infrastructure projects.
Earlier this year, the ministry announced the launch of its 'e-sankhyiki' portal to enhance data access.
It has already been trying to ensure that surveys are released within 90 days of completion of the surveys.
It is also working to enhance its sources of data. Moneycontrol reported that it will launch the monthly urban and rural unemployment rate data by February end or March 2025.
India's GDP data is likely to be revised by February 2026. India is also expected to get a newer series of inflation from February 2026.
While the CPI will have 2024 as base year for prices, the GDP series is expected to work with 2022-23 as base year.
