Food minister KV Thomas on Tuesday defended the decision to go ahead with the Food Security Bill and said that people should not be forced to beg for food. “This is a legal entitlement. This has become a right. Do you want people to go with a begging bowl or should they stand and say bring my food”, he said in an interview to CNBC-TV18.
According to Thomas, the bill aimed to modernise and strengthen the public distribution system (PDS) and prevent leakages. Currently, there are food grain leakages of 20-35 percent in the PDS, he added.
