The Supreme Court's verdict on BS-III vehicles is supreme and the industry will abide by it but the industry was penalised for not doing something it was not asked to do, says Pawan Goenka, Managing Director, M&M.

Goenka said the auto industry was forced to dole out fire sales to reduce BS-III inventory due to the Supreme Court order. M&M has cut its BS-III inventory by half in the two-day clearance sale, he told CNBC-TV18 in an exclusive interview.

Total BS-III inventory for M&M was worth around Rs 3,000 crore before the verdict and the company has been able to remove half of it at around a 15 percent discount, he said.

Goenka is hopeful of some leniency from the Supreme Court in allowing the industry to sell the remaining stock. Due to the order, a view is forming that the auto industry has done something wrong. He saud he is confused by SC notification that states that the industry wasn't ready for a transition.
