The labour strike at Bajaj Auto's Chakan plant continues with majority of workers abstaining from work today as well. However, the company's MD, Rajiv Bajaj today, told CNBC-TV18 that the situation is improving and the company would be able to achieve atleast 25 percent output at Chakan plant.

He also said that the current strike could be termed 'illegal' by local authorities. The Bajaj Auto management is somewhat hopeful because the police have swung into action and nine arrests have been made, all of which may be non-bailable, reports CNBC-TV18’s Ronojoy Banerjee. The overall focus is going to be on high-end bikes like the KTM and the export market, Bajaj said. He also said that the local authorities are looking at the viability of whether they want to declare this strike illegal or not. Now, that could have far reaching implications similar to the case of union strike at Manesar plant of the Maruti Suzuki a couple of years back. Rajiv Bajaj said, “More and more people are coming back to work. On the first day of this illegal strike, about 100 people came to work, on the second day it was 200, now it is 300. That number is going up with each day, so that is very encouraging. As a result of that the production is slowly inching up everyday and we are today hoping to strike a production of about 25 percent of our normal production.”
