Pawan Goenka, Executive Director of Mahindra and Mahindra on the sidelines of KUV100 launch in Mumbai spoke to the media and explained the implications of the Supreme Court order to ban diesel vehicles above 2000 cc would mean to the company and industry as a whole. He also spoke on how the company would tackle this situation going forward.
He said that indeed the capital city ‘Delhi’s’ air quality had worsened and that the government needed to take immediate steps to rectify the situation but was unhappy about the arbitrary manner in which the decision was taken, adding that he though it was based on misinterpretation on the sources of pollution.
He also talked about the way forward for the company, adding that around 1000 diesel cars are in the Delhi NCR region and these will have to be sold in the regions outside the Delhi NCR area and the capital city would have to replenish with non-diesel stock.
He said this was a good opportunity for the company to expand its petrol lineup, which today began with the launch of 1.2 petrol engine which the KUV100 will get, adding that Scorpio and XUV500 will also be launched with petrol variant albeit after some time.
According to him this SC order could maybe be a blessing in disguise for electric vehicles which was a non polluting mode of transport and perhaps the government may look at incentivizing the electric vehicles.
