DMK's K Kanimozhi appeared at the special court on Friday for the 2G trial. CNBC-TV18's Siddharth Zarabi reports on the developments.
The court discussed Kanimozhi and Kalaignar TV's Sharad Kumar's bail plea on the 2G case. Cineyug's director Karim Morani was allowed to remain absent from a personal appearance as he had been undergoing medical treatment (angioplasty). Defence lawyer Ram Jethmalani argued for Kanimozhi's bail as the CBI had not made any charges against her. Jethmalani tried to prove that the case on CBI's charge sheet has been 'made up' and the allegations are not strong enough to keep Kanimozhi in jail. A similar set of arguments were used by Sharad Kumar's lawyer as well. Vijay Agarwal argued for both, DB Realty's Asif Balwa and Rajiv Agarwal, who are in police custody saying that the CBI's chargesheet is weak. Vijay Agarwal added that several CBI witnesses, which include noted lobbyist like Nira Radia and DoT officers like AK Srivastava, should have also been accused in this case. Therefore, he told the court that the CBI had been trying to build up a case citing CBI's chargesheet as weak and deficient. The prosecution did not have any say on that. The special prosecutor Uday Lalit placed his arguments against the defence when the court got back into session. A few more session would decide whether K Kanimozhi will be joining the 11 others in Tihar Jail or will remain free if the court accepts her lawyer's arguments. Also watch the accompanying video.
