If all goes well, Daman might just get its first casino. Daman Hospitality Private Limited, a subsidiary of the gaming company Delta Corp Limited, has filed a writ petition in the Bombay High Court on Thursday, seeking the Daman and Diu administration to grant them a casino licence under Section 13A of the Goa, Daman and Diu Public Gambling Act, 1976.
A subsidiary of Delta Corp’s started a five star resort 'The Deltin’ in Daman and the proposed licence is for the same.
Delta Corp already operates three offshore and one onshore casino in Goa, two hotels in Goa, one resort in Daman and a casino in Sikkim.
The petition has been addressed to the administrator of Daman and Diu Union, the territory administration of Daman and Diu and the director of tourism of the Union Territory Administration. Back in 2014, Delta had made an appeal to the authorities for a permission but the plan did not fall in place due to lack of a go-ahead from the authorities.
“Delta had planned to start with electronic slot machine games at its Daman resort, but the plan fell through and since there was no development regarding the same in the past four years, they decided to take it up at the high court level,” said an industry insider.
According to him, since The Deltin is the only five-star in Daman, a casino could boost the tourism in the place.
