Are you one of those enthusiastic make-up fans who cannot start your daily exercise routine without applying a generous layer of your favourite foundation? Before you reach for it again on your way to the gym, consider a recent study published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology. The study reveals that wearing foundation during exercise can have an impact on your skin, a concern echoed by dermatologists who warn that it could clog your pores and even results in acne.

The study involved 43 healthy college students (20 males and 23 females), with half of them applying foundation cream to their forehead and upper cheeks, while the other half left their skin bare. The results were revealing. After exercising, the entire face showed increased moisture, particularly in the areas where make-up was applied. Skin pore size also increased after exercise, especially on the non-make-up side, while oil production decreased where make-up was used.

So, how exactly does makeup harm your skin during a workout?

Exercise induces changes in sweat production, boosts metabolism, and indirectly affects the condition of the skin. For example, with each 0.2-degree increase in internal temperature during exercise, more blood flows to the skin as a regulatory measure. This leads to the expansion of skin pores to expel waste products and sebum, which must be cleansed before they accumulate and potentially harm the skin.
