Remember the time when a man’s grooming shelf held little more than shaving foam, aftershave and a bar of soap? Fast-forward to today, and the story has changed dramatically. Men are discovering that good skin isn’t about vanity. It is about feeling confident, looking fresh, and taking charge of their overall wellbeing.
For years, skincare was mistakenly thought it was only for women. But that old stereotype has finally cracked. Today, men want fuss-free, functional routines backed by science rather than marketing fluff. Anurag Mehrotra, Chairman, Fixderma, tells Moneycontrol, “Healthy, well-cared for skin is an extension of overall wellness and self-confidence… It’s the era of men being in charge of their skin care.” Plus, it doesn’t need to be complicated. A handful of smart ingredients can transform your skin without turning your day upside down.
Best ingredients every man must have
Mehrotra suggests a simple, no-nonsense breakdown of the most effective skincare ingredients to keep your grooming kit modern and meaningful:

Niacinamide (Vitamin B3)
The ultimate multitasker. It strengthens the skin barrier, minimises redness, controls oil and shrinks pores — making it ideal for men with combination or acne-prone skin. Gentle enough for daily use, even post-shave.
Hyaluronic Acid
Despite thicker and oilier skin, many men suffer from dehydration thanks to shaving and sun exposure. Hyaluronic acid hydrates without heaviness. Opt for blends with multiple molecular weights to nourish both surface and deeper layers.
Vitamin C
Everyday exposure to pollution leaves skin looking dull. Vitamin C brightens, protects from oxidative stress and boosts collagen. Choose stable forms like ethyl ascorbic acid or ascorbyl glucoside for smoother results and better compatibility.

Salicylic Acid (BHA)
A must-have for those dealing with acne, blackheads or rough texture. It dives deep into pores, dissolving excess oil and dead cells. It is most effective when used in cleansers or toners.
Ceramides
Shaving, harsh soaps and city pollution can weaken the skin’s natural barrier. Ceramides rebuild that defence system, locking in moisture and shielding against daily damage.
Sun protection (SPF 50+ with PA+++)
No routine is complete without this daily essential. Look for lightweight, non-sticky formulas with modern filters such as Uvinul A Plus or zinc oxide. A good sunscreen prevents tanning, pigmentation and even early ageing.
“Men want speed and efficiency—and skincare can deliver exactly that.” says Menrotra and shares a routine that actually works:
Morning: Cleanser → Vitamin C serum → Niacinamide moisturiser → Sunscreen
Evening: Cleanser → Salicylic acid (2–3 times a week) → Ceramide or Hyaluronic acid moisturiser
