Under-eye bags, also known as puffy eyes or bags under the eyes, are a common and very distressing concern that occurs as part of the aging process. As the skin ages, it becomes looser and tends to be more susceptible to damage, as well as beginning to lose some of the elasticity, or ability to spring back, that it had in its younger days. The skin under the eyes is particularly sensitive, with few oil glands, so over time, the condition of the skin beneath the eye can worsen.

As this under-eye skin droops to its new place atop the cheek, it might actually look as though there is a pouch or bag beneath the eye. Furthermore, the ligaments that support the eye may also weaken or lose their elasticity, leading to the fatty tissue that protects the eye pushing out a bit and also settling beneath the eye, causing even more obvious puffiness.

As collagen-based skin proteins are worn away or become damaged by any number of factors, the skin becomes less elastic and flexible, and we develop these awful-looking bags under the eyes. These changes in skin support occur for various reasons and may not be affected solely by whatever we do to take good care of ourselves; perhaps, they are factors that we can influence, but only to some extent. If the puffiness – or bags – is a little loose skin that twinkles as we get out of bed or can appear more consistently, be aware of some factors that affect the development of under-eye bags.
