Setting a beautiful table involves more than just selecting the right plates and cutlery; the glassware you choose can make a significant impact on the overall dining experience. By understanding the different types of glassware and their uses, you can create a table setting that is both beautiful and functional.
Whether it’s a casual brunch or a formal dinner, the right glassware can make all the difference. From stemware for wines, champagne flutes to old-fashioned tumblers and specialty glasses, various styles of glasses can be used for different purposes. For investing in quality glassware for home, Andreas Buske, owner and director of the Board of Zwiesel Kristallglas AG, says, “When you offer different wines in your menu, you need to make sure that you also have the appropriate wine glasses. Red and white wine glasses are essential for a comprehensive setting. Invest in three different wine glasses. Red wine glasses with a larger bowl to aerate the wine and enhance flavours. White wine glasses with a smaller bowl to maintain the wine’s temperature and delicate aromas. And last but not least, champagne flutes with tall, narrow glasses to preserve the bubbles and show off the effervescence. I would then add a water tumbler to it, which can be used for water, juice or soft drinks. If you’re offering cocktails, then of course, you need to select the right glassware for each type, like martini glasses for martinis, and old-fashioned glasses for whiskey-based drinks.”
Latest trends:
Lately, especially minimalist and modern designs (geometric shapes) can be seen on the glassware market. Speaking about the latest trends, Buske mentions, “The mouth-blown, handmade glass is a trend which is still growing. People are fascinated by local artisanship and craftsmanship and everybody wants to have unique pieces. One aspect which is getting more and more important is perfect all round glasses. Most people do not want to differentiate between multiple red wine, white wine and sparkling wine glasses. They prefer to have one glass or maybe two that is appropriate for multiple wine styles and grapes. From clean designs to more colourful options, there are many new designs available. On one hand, we see subtle pastel shades, and on the other very bold and vivid colours can be found.”
Keep them shiny:
For longevity, maintaining your glassware in pristine condition needs careful handling and regular upkeep. Whether you prefer the meticulous approach of hand washing or the convenience of a dishwasher, the right way to clean them will keep them sparkling and beautiful for years. Says Buske, “We recommend putting the glasses, even the mouth-blown ones, in the dishwasher. If you pay attention to a few things (correct temperature, water hardness and sufficient space between the glasses), this is safer and also cleaner than washing by hand. After the wash cycle, open the lid immediately so that the water vapour can escape. Otherwise, the water vapour will settle in the glasses and require annoying polishing or could cause clouding over a longer period of time. Another tip for storing goblets: Always store the goblet facing upwards so that air can circulate and no unpleasant odours develop.”
