The most regal and extravagant event, the Met Gala, is just a week away. The theme for the 2024 Spring exhibit was announced November last year and fashion enthusiasts all over were buzzing with excitement. Just the name of the theme “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” sounds so dreamy and ethereal.
According to Vogue, around 250 pieces from the Costume Institute’s permanent collection will be displayed in new ways. Max Hollein, The Met’s Marina Kellen French Director and CEO, said: “This innovative show will push the boundaries of our imagination and invite us to experience many facets of a work, to learn more about its history, and, ultimately, to gain a deeper appreciation of its beauty.”
From 17th century soft pastels to 21st century ripped jeans. The exhibit will cover 400 years of history. Other fashion items will include designs by Yves Saint Laurent, Hubert de Givenchy, Christian Dior and many other trailblazing fashion designers.
In an interview with Vogue, Andrew Bolton, Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of The Costume Institute, said: “Fashion is one of the most emotional artistic forms because of its connection to the body. It is imbued with memory and emotions, and we relate to it very much via our senses. One thing I hope this show will activate is that sensorial appreciation of fashion.”
The dress code for the exhibit is ‘The Garden of Time’. It is supposed to be a visual metaphor to nature and the fragility and evanescence of fashion.
Let’s hope that we see some truly mind blowing fashion pieces this year. One has to wait and watch to see what fashion designer Law Roach has in mind for Zendaya who is a co-chair in the event along with Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny and Chris Hemsworth.
The Met exhibition will open on on May 10 through September 2, 2024.
