White discharge during pregnancy is exactly what its name suggests: a discharge that women get during their pregnancy – white in colour. It is typically milky-textured, thin, and white in hue. This type of vaginal discharge is known as leukorrhea, which is a common occurrence both in pregnant and non-pregnant women. During pregnancy, hormonal changes can cause an increase in the amount and consistency of this white discharge. While it is usually harmless and a normal part of pregnancy, understanding the causes, potential concerns, and when to seek medical advice can help alleviate any worries.

The medical word for white vaginal discharge is leukorrhea. The fluid produced by the cervix and vagina that keeps the vagina clean and moist is known as vaginal discharge, says Dr Pooja Mehta, director and unit head, department of obstetrics and gynaecology, Marengo Asia hospital, Gurugram.

Additionally, it aids in infection prevention, says Dr Mehta. Vaginal discharges can be classified according to their colour, texture, or underlying reason. Typical varieties include Clear and watery, clear and stretchy, brown or bloody, yellow or green.
