Common cold often affects the nose and throat, which constitute the upper respiratory tract. It is usually harmless and may not need medical supervision unless symptoms are severe, persistent, or occur in children.
While symptoms, mainly including a stuffy nose, sore throat and cough, subside in 7–10 days, it is not a smooth ride and can cause irritation, discomfort, and disturbed sleep.
However, Luke Cutinho, who specialises in lifestyle and preventive healthcare, shared on his Instagram how a simple home remedy can come in handy if you are suffering from “blocked nose, stuffy sinuses, and a clogged, heavy feeling in your head and ears.”

He recommended drinking ajwain tea, listing its benefits, recipe, and optional remedies.
Health Benefits of Ajwain for Treating Common Cold:
Ajwain seeds are rich in thymol (thyme oil), which offers:
- Mucolytic action: Breaks down thick, sticky mucus so it’s easier to expel.
- Antimicrobial properties: Helps reduce bacterial or fungal overgrowth in the respiratory tract.
- Anti-inflammatory benefits: Soothes swollen, irritated sinus tissues.
When simmered in water, thymol and antioxidants are released, creating a natural decongestant that also supports your immunity.

Recipe for Ajwain Tea:
- Take 1 teaspoon of ajwain seeds.
- Boil in 2 cups of water.
- Reduce to 1 cup by simmering.
- Strain and drink warm.
- Adults: 1–2 cups/day.
- Kids (7+ years): 1 cup/day if well-tolerated. (For kids under the age of 7, please consult your paediatrician.)
Not only this, Luke also suggested how optional boosters like fresh ginger, cinnamon, and lemon can multiply the health benefits and add to the effectiveness of ajwain tea.
Additionally, ajwain steam inhalation can also come to your aid.
For this:
- Add crushed ajwain seeds or ajwain oil drops to hot water.
- Inhale the steam to help loosen mucus in the nasal passages and chest—an instant relief trick for stubborn congestion.
However, he cautioned to avoid or stop in case you develop an allergy or if it worsens the symptoms, making mucus turn green or yellow with fever.
While this is a “prescribed care,” Luke mentioned that it is not a replacement for medical care. However, it’s a simple and effective remedy that doesn’t burn a hole in your pocket.
